우산각(雨傘閣)   [The Pavilion of Memories: Usangak]

나 어릴 적, 동네 샘터와 닷새마다 서던 야문 5일장은 이웃들이 정을 나누던 소통의 장이었습니다. 마을 어귀 우산각 아래, 이웃들 서로 들며 날며 둘러앉아 비를 피하고 더위를 식히던 그리운 만남의 광장. 동네 샘터 물 긷는 소리 머물고 야문장 가던 길목, 조평(鳥平) 마을엔 아름다운 사랑 노래처럼 새들의 울음소리 청아하게 들려옵니다 여기 우산각에 가만히 앉아 그 옛날 샘터의 물 긷는 소리와 새들이 날아드는 평평한 마을, 그 위로 펼쳐진 아련한 날갯짓을 봅니다.

In the days of my youth, the village well And the bustling five-day market of Yamun Were the heart of our world, where neighbours shared their souls. At the village entrance stands the Pavilion, Usangak, Where people drifted in and out like the tide, Sitting together to shelter from the rain And cooling the heat of the midday sun. I still hear the splash of water at the well, And on the road to Yamun market, in the village of Jopyeong— Where birds gather on the peaceful plains— Their songs ring out like beautiful hymns of love. Now, sitting here beneath this same Pavilion, I listen for the echoes of the drawing water, Watching the faint flutter of wings As the birds take flight over the quiet fields of home.
